Teach your horse to high five!

What You Need:

  • All you need for this trick is…your horse 🙂 I do like to use treats when I teach tricks but I use them sparingly. I know that not everyone uses treats and that’s totally fine! If you do, I would recommend using them sparingly as well. If you give your horse treats every single time, they could become demanding and impolite. Treats are great but the biggest reward should be your praise and lots of loves! 🙂

Step One:

  • Have your horse stand a couple inches in front of you . Make sure you both have room to stretch your legs 🙂 Next, stick your leg out in front of your horse, and gently grab your horses opposite leg. Pull it up so that their hoove touches your foot, then release their leg and drop yours at the same time.

Step Two:

  • Repeat this several times. Stick your leg out and bring theirs up to meet it. After you think your horse has the general idea of what you’re asking, go ahead and stop picking up their leg. Just stick your foot out and wait patiently. If your horse understands, it will lift its leg and give your foot a small high five. Make sure to praise them if this is the case! If your horse just stands there and looks at you blankly, continue with step one.

    Here’s some advice:

    • This trick is so easy to teach and so much fun to do once your horse gets it! Soon you’ll be giving each other high fives all the time! This is one of my horses favorite tricks to do! Here’s some things that are important to remember as you teach the High Five:
    • All horses learn at a different pace! Some learn tricks within days, others take months…this is OKAY. Please remember to be patient with your horse as they learn new tricks. Remember that they’ve never done this before so it will take them a while to nail it. But when they do, the wait will be well worth it, I promise!
    • WARNING! This trick is a BLAST…but it can also develop some bad habits. When I taught my horse the High Five, he loved it so much that he would bring his leg up at random times and end up giving me a nice bump on my shin…super fun… If this happens, the best way to fix it is to let your horse know that the only time their allowed to High Five is when YOU ask for one! Any time my horse would even start to raise his leg, I would give him a firm tap on his knee. Not hard, but firm. I would tell him no and keep doing what ever it was I was doing, like nothing even happened. Because of this, he no longer tries to high five me unexpectedly and waits for when I ask. Again this trick is so much fun, but just keep this in mind 🙂
