This trick is probably the easiest one out there to teach! It’s one that can be taught the first day no problem 🙂 The end result is fun and, not to mention, super cute!

What You’ll Need For The Hug:

  • The only thing you’ll need for this trick is treats ( if you even want to use treats ) and that’s really it 🙂 You don’t need a halter or lead rope but you can totally use one if you’d like 🙂 The only reason my horse has one on in the picture is because I was to lazy to take it off haha!

Step 1:

  • Okay, grab your horse and get ready to hug them!
  • The first thing you’ll need to do is stand to the side of them, facing them. Make sure that they are paying attention to you 🙂
  • Wrap one of you arms under their neck and reach your other arm behind your back, this is where the treat comes in handy.
  • show your horse that you’ve got a treat in your hand and wait for them to try and take it.

Step 2:

  • Once your horse moves to grab the treat start pulling your arm back around your body so your hand is back at your side. Encourage your horses head to follow your hand, so that they are now wrapping around your body.

Step 3:

  • Now that you’ve got your horse into the hugging position, make them wait there a little bit longer before rewarding them with the treat 🙂 repeat this several times until you feel like they know they’re supposed to hug you when you wrap your arm under their neck 🙂

Side Note:

  • If you are doing this trick without the treats it isn’t a bad idea to use a halter 🙂
  • Do all the steps we just went over but instead of asking them to follow your hand with the treat, gently pull the halter towards you until the head in wrapped around you. repeat several times 🙂 Make sure that you’re still rewarding them with lots of pets so they know they’re doing a good job.
